Watch out for driveway robbery

KENSINGTON B – Robbers are now targeting motorists at the gates of their homes.

Motorists are cautioned to be more vigilant, after an increased criminal trend of driveway robbery has been noted.

According to Randburg Police Sector 2 manager Constable Mahawe Dlodlo the trend is escalating in the Sandton Police precinct and they fear it could spread to the Randburg area.

“When the drivers got out of their vehicles, they found that their gates’ ability to open had been prevented due to suspects securing cable ties, binding the gate to the fence or frame. As a result, the gate cannot be opened immediately,” explained Const Dlodlo.

He explained that while attempting to break off the cables ties, armed criminals would then approach and rob them of their jewellery and electronic items.

“Residents with palisade fencing or gates designed in such a way that this method could possibly be used, need to be aware. I will suggest brightening headlights to enable the driver to spot the cable or tape used. This may also alert any residents already home to your presence,” he further advised.

He warned that if the tape, cable or any other interference was spotted, motorists should drive away and call for assistance from police or security companies.

“Alternatively, if someone is already home, drive away and telephonically ask them to remove the obstruction from the inside of the premises but stress that they should not carry the gate remote with them when going out,” concluded Dlodlo.

These incidents were not yet identified in the Randburg precinct – however it remained a possible future method for criminal elements in the area.
