Vega hosts a TEDx talk

BORDEAUX – Speakers share their inspiring stories with students at Vega School of Brand leadership

The Vega School of Brand leadership (Vega), in Bordeaux, hosted its first TEDx talk, on 1 October.

The event was attended by celebrities, students, parents and the public.

According to Vega’s national marketing manager, Nicky Stanley, the TEDx programme is designed to help communities, organisations and individuals to spark conversations and connections.

Devon Solomon, a third year Vega student and event organiser, said the 2015 event theme was Rethink/Unlearn and it was conceptualised by fellow student and organiser, Terri Cameron.

Solomon said the theme made sense for the school and aligned well to the curriculum within Vega, which challenges students to push boundaries with creative and innovative ideas.

He said their theme for 2015 was aimed at challenging the ways we perceive and interact with the world around us.

Solomon said in selecting their line-up of speakers they wanted to ensure that they picked game changers who from a variety of industries, have made or continue to make an impact by virtue of challenging norms and perceptions.

He said their stories are inspiring but more importantly they facilitate much needed engagement on the ills and successes of society.

The award winning record producer, DJ and entrepreneur, Black Coffee spoke about how his success was built solely by seeking the road less taken and turning challenges into opportunities.

Paralympic athlete Samkelo Radebe spoke about how the body always follows the mind and how practicing this in his day to day life enabled him to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and go on to win numerous awards, both here at home and abroad, as a Paralympic sprint runner and high jumper.

Award winning journalist and author Gia Nicolaides reminded people that it was only by embracing change that we could achieve greatness, while Vega co-founder, Gordon Cook, said that when we start to see each other as one human race, only then can we let go of the things that hold us back such as prejudice.
