KENSINGTON B – The Kenbrink Residents Association (KRA) reckoned the state of the pool was in decay and required maintenance.

The popular swimming pool in Kensington B is in a state of decay and authorities are simply not paying attention.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and Kenbrink Residents Association (KRA) chairperson Sandy Heidstra complained that City of Joburg is failing to maintain the pool.

Numerous issues requiring maintenance were established during an oversight visit.

It was realised that there was no first aid kit, oxygen cylinder and chairs in the office were broken.

According to both Wood and Heidstra, broken windows at the office have not been repaired for over a year, while the roof was leaking and the front boards above doorway to ablution facilities were rotten and dangerous.

The paddling pool was leaking and without water pressure.

“Retesting was not done for life guard compliance or first aid, which is supposed to be done before the new season,” said Heidstra.

She further explained that the drain cover for the weir is badly rusted and dangerous.

“There is no high chair and filters need new sand,” she reckoned.

“We have little children running here all the time. There are no facilities for disabled people and some of the toilet doors are rotten. The inside ablution facilities need to be replaced,” said councillor Wood.

The pool is currently used by residents from Kensington B and the surrounding areas.

According to Wood there is one life guard on duty and over the weekends when up to 80 people use the pool.

Residents reckoned that regulations require no more than 50 people in the pool if there is only one lifeguard. “When many residents come here to swim one guard cannot cope,” he explained.

KRA insisted they initially offered City of Joburg an additional guard who would assist on weekends, but they refused.

City of Joburg is yet to comment on the state of the pool.
