Residents clean their suburb

KENSINGTON B – Residents decided to clean up after they were fed up with filthy garbage and neglected street signs in their suburb.

Residents took an initiative for two consecutive days on 22–23 August to clean their suburb.

They said that they previously requested municipal departments to assist them with the clean-up, but nothing was done.

A member of Kenbrink Resident’s Association (KRA), Arlene Leggat said, “We can wait for someone else to do this, or we can ensure that the suburb we live in is clean and tidy.

“We have no wish to live in a suburb that is becoming more derelict and run-down because of a lack of basic services.”

Residents built a barrier at the Milner Road curve.

According to Leggat, the City promised to erect an Armco barrier nearly two years ago and nothing was done.

This apparently resulted in cars going through the fence into the Magistrates’ Court veld, and then residents had to incur expenses to fix the fence.

“All the signpost poles in the suburb will be painted over the next week. The teams only managed to get through about 75 per cent on the weekend but the visual difference is astounding,” she added.

She reckoned that residents straightened the stop signs that were leaning over and ensured that the signs were facing the right way.

“In desperation the teams also painted some road markings at intersections where, literally, there was no more paint on the road.

It was impossible to see anything on the road surface which makes for extremely hazardous intersections,” added Leggat.

General clean-up was done in the park, along Milner outside the Randburg Police Station and on North Road.

“The KRA will continue to do regular work within the suburb but they really need JRA to step up and do what is required of them,” she concluded.
