Urban inspection identifies service problems

FERNDALE – Inspection allows the City to establish service delivery obstacles in Ward 104.

About 60 basic service problems which require attention from the City of Joburg were identified in Ferndale during the Ward 104 inspection on 18 August.

Urban inspection is done about twice a month in every ward. The urban inspector and the Ward councillor chooses a suburb and monitors all the basic service challenges that need to be resolved.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and City of Joburg Ward 104 urban inspector Nokuthula Ngobese monitored the Ferndale area to check all the existing problems.

The major problem that was discovered during the monitoring was a burst sewage pipe which was leaking at the corner of Oxford Street and Vine Avenue. “This problem was reported at the City and they are going to fix it,” said Wood.

Ngobese said that the aim of monitoring the area was to establish basic service challenges and log complaints to the City departments so that they could fix them.

Among other service issues discovered during the inspection were potholes, vagrants, illegal posters, and road markings.

She further explained that the inspection allowed the City to seek out residents who were contravening the City bylaws.

“If we find out problems such as vagrants loitering around, we then organise authorities and arrange joint operations and ensure that bylaws are followed,” concluded Ngobese.
