Acting Randburg Police station commander, Colonel Andries Odendaal, will represent South Africa in this year’s Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operations Organisation (SARPCCO) sports tournament.

Col Odendaal is among the eight tennis players selected to represent the country’s SAPS Tennis Club.

The tournament is played every two years.

“In 2013 the tournament was played in Namibia and the South African Tennis Club was the overall winner, winning all the gold medals,” Col Odendaal said.

According to him, the tournament seeks to promote, strengthen and foster joint strategies for the management of all ranks. Players participate in various sports code including athletics, tennis, volleyball, netball, soccer and chess.

The tournament will commence on 19 July in Mbabane in Swaziland and Col Odendaal will depart on 12 July to join other South African Police officials in Middleburg, before leaving the country. He said they will initially train before they depart.

Col Odendaal is a member of the Sandton Sports Club and the chairperson of the tennis section.

“I play social and competitive tennis and I also participate in the league,” he explained.

He said in the police force, fitness is always a priority. “Although my job is demanding I always practise at least three times a week, during the evening and weekends,” he said.

Gauteng Provincial SAPS awarded Col Odendaal a certificate of first runner-up sports administrator for his role as the chairperson of Police National Tennis Association.
