Linden residents oppose street pole cell mast

LINDEN – Linden residents voices out their dissatisfaction regarding the installation of street pole cell mast in the area.

Linden residents allege that MTN  installed a street pole cell mast in their area, regardless of their petition against it.

According to residents, their cries went unheard after they had submitted a petition with 500 signatures, opposing the installation of the cell mast.

“We, as residents, don’t want the cell mast because they have microwaves or radiations that are pumping through 24 hours a day, and that affects the human body,” said a concerned resident Alkis Koutouvides.

“There are actually more concerns – we can’t sleep at night because you can hear the towers. They [cell masts] bring stress-related symptoms. It is not healthy. I mean 500 signatures say a lot,” confessed Koutouvides.

Another resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the cell mast should be removed.

“There are thousands of people who don’t realise the dangers of a cell mast. I am worried for health reasons, it affects the human body, and it is unnatural, and people are ending up with headaches. The whole area is covered with them, why add more cell masters?” anonymous questioned.

Ward 99 councillor Bruce Herbert said residents did sign a petition but, it was overturned.

“The matter went through to City Council and it was fully investigated,” he said.

However, Herbert said the signal in Linden is very poor and needs an upgrade.

“We have to do something about the signal,” he said.

The Ward councillor added, “They [cell masts] have been checked out and I have been told that they are safe.

“I support that we are improving Linden – we are either going to have cellphones working or not working at all,” said Herbert.

He intends addressing residents about the towers at a later stage.

Questions were sent to MTN and they are yet to comment.

However, they responded on twitter and said, “MTN has not built any site in this area, it’s still consulting with the residents.”
