Don’t forget those with Alzheimer’s and dementia

BRYANSTON – A wellness village aims to spread a better understanding of Alzheimer's and dementia across the community.

At a recent media briefing held at the Silverwood Manor (soon to be Livewell Village) Bryanston, ambassadors from Livewell briefed the media about the myths surrounding those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. “Sometimes it is found that people do not understand the disease and just look at is as being something crazy. However, most of the time the people who are living with the disease just need some kind of connection – they are people too. We as a society should always remember that,” explained Livewell ambassador Bernadette Lawrence. She further explained that the disease can be treated with proper care.

The Livewell Village is set to open in September to mark World Alzheimer’s Day.

Ambassador Madre Fraenhel said that awareness brings knowledge and knowledge will bring insight into understanding the disease. “Our aim is to protect the dignity of people living with the disease and assist the families in coping with living with someone with the disease,” added Fraenhel.

Fraenhel also said that there are various therapies available for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, namely:

• Validation – show the person that they matter

• Reminisce – take them back to a happy time

• Doll-therapy – a sense of having something there

• Animals – animals provide a sense of calm

• Sensory stimulation
