Wheeling and dealing

JOBURG – Pikitup reminds residents about how to order new, additional, or replacement wheelie bins.

Residents are reminded of the procedure to be followed when it comes to the ordering of new or additional 240-litre Pikitup bins as well as the replacement of stolen or damaged ones, and how to deter thieves.

First, the customer needs to log a call with the Joburg Connect Call Centre and obtain a reference number. The Pikitup depot closest to the customer will be provided with the same reference number directly from Joburg Connect. The depot will then contact the customer to agree on a date for delivery of the bin. The turnaround time is seven days, unless there are other challenges beyond Pikitup’s control from the supplier.

Any member of the household over the age of 18 may sign the delivery note for the bin. If no one is at home during the day, the customer is advised to collect the bin directly from their nearest Pikitup depot. The reference number provided when they logged the call with Joburg Connect needs to be produced on collection of the bin. Operating hours of depots are weekdays from 7.30am to 3.30pm for collection of bins. Depots are closed over weekends.

Pikitup will collect refuse in plastic bags from a customer awaiting delivery of their bin. Should the customer’s refuse not be collected, the customer can take their refuse to their nearest garden site for disposal in the appropriate area demarcated for this purpose. Here it should also be noted that Pikitup does not collect grass cuttings in refuse bags. Garden refuse must be taken to a garden site. A list of garden sites is available from Pikitup or Joburg Connect.

A customer may not use a non-Pikitup branded bin for residential waste disposal. Only an approved Pikitup bin may be used for containerisation of general domestic waste. Pikitup will not collect extra plastic bags of refuse placed next to a customer’s bin on collection days. It remains the customer’s responsibility to obtain an additional Pikitup bin if their single bin does not sufficiently provide for their refuse disposal requirements.

A customer will incur no charge for new or additional Pikitup bins, and replacement of stolen or damaged ones. All customers are, however, urged to label their bin clearly with their address to deter thieves. Customers are also strongly advised not to leave their bin out overnight, but to take it back inside the property as soon as possible after refuse collection, as would-be criminals have been known to use these bins for leverage when scaling driveway gates and boundary walls.
