Hijacking suspect caught

RANDBURG – A highjacked car is found before the crime is even reported.

Suspects involved in an apparent hijack will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 1 June.

A man was allegedly caught driving in a Waterberg Countrywide Toyota Quantum, that he and a group of other suspects allegedly hijacked on the N14 near Diepsloot on 28 May.

When the local police tracing unit learned of the hijacking through a tip-off, “[The Police] were quick to react, and by the time the victim arrived at the police station to report the matter, the suspect had already been apprehended. Even Tracker traced the minibus into police custody,” said spokesperson for the Station Commander of Diepsloot Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela.

It is reported that while driving on the N14 toward Pretoria, the Quantum was allegedly bumped from the rear by a blue Toyota Camry.

The victim stopped to engage the blue Toyota Camry driver, while another white Toyota Quantum reportedly stopped in front of the victim’s Quantum.

“A group of about seven men alighted from the Toyota Quantum, one carrying a firearm. They forced him back into his own vehicle and drove away – a short while later, they dropped off the victim, ” added WO Mavimbela.

When the victim arrived to report the hijacking, he found his Quantum, which was recovered in Diepsloot Extension 2, parked at the police station .

He further identified to the police, the 28-year-old suspect whom he found in the client service centre, as one of the men who had earlier hijacked his Quantum on the N14.

SAPS is still looking for the remaining suspects, while the current suspect has been charged with the hijacking of a motor vehicle.
