CMATHS winners

DARRENWOOD – CMATHS Darrenwood cleans up at the CMATHS National Championships.

The Randburg branch in Darrenwood recently competed in the CMATHS National Championships on 16 May in Midrand Conference Centre.

Two hundred of the organisation’s top students gathered at the picturesque venue to compete not only against each other but also themselves and the clock. These students were the top performers from their respective regional championships.

“These brilliant young minds, aged between six and 14, had to complete difficult mathematic challenges on their Soroban in a time limit that would leave most adults sweating,” said Michelle Olen-Coetzee of Randburg CMATHS.

Students use their Soroban to add, subtract, divide, multiply and even complete decimal sums.

Caitlyn Morgan was awarded Gold.

The results are as below:

Champion of Champions:

Jako Martin Muller and Landen Samodien.

Champions:

Daniel van der Westhuizen, Dennis Chung, Gad Ben-Schachar, Tristan West and Tristyn Reece Govender.

Gold:

Caitlyn Faith Morgan, Joshua Taylor and Sias Bruinette.

Silver:

Aphiwe Mtambo, Cor Muller, Daniel van der Westhuizen, Prince Nweke, Louis Coetzee and Monique Samodien.

Bronze:

Emile Kleynhans and Emmylou Savage.
