Sewing for community upliftment

WINDSOR EAST – Eva Sewing Academy aims to empower the Windsor community through sewing.

The Windsor East Recreation Centre offers sewing lessons every day of the week to the community. Eva Sewing Academy gives the community a chance to become self-sustainable and affords them the chance of finding a job once they have completed the course.”The dream is not to start a fashion movement to improve the way people in the community dress and groom themselves, rather I want to empower people through teaching them a skill and, in effect, bettering the lives of the community regardless of gender, race as well as age,” said owner of Eva Sewing Academy, Evasi Ncube.

Ncube explained her hopes to create employment by recruiting those who complete their training, as she intends to venture into manufacturing different items such as bed linen and also tailored suits (continental).

According to Ncube, the main vision involves training the community free of charge since the goal is to assist, but this has proved to be quite a challenge as they lack finances to purchase the needed machinery, material as well as patterns – all required for the process of training. The academy would like to provide certification to those who complete the training as this will enable them to acquire employment. The academy is in need of any donations that will help with their vision.

“Being able to help people is a real privilege – there is nothing as precious as giving back to the community and knowing that you are actually making a difference,” expressed teacher Zanelle Ncube.

Student at the academy Delphina Kgobe said she plans to make a success of herself after completing the course.”I can’t wait to become independent, I am very excited that this will help me find a job in the future,” said Kgobe.

“Sewing is nice and I really enjoy it. I want to become a tailor when I go back to my country. In three months I have learned so much,” said student Rozina Sibanda.
