Record-breaking second

MALANSHOF – Runner walks away with cash prize and record-breaking title.

A new record was set at the annual Adrienne Hersch Challenge when Lucky Mohale clocked in the 21km race at 01:07:05, one second faster than the previous record.

At 7am on 10 May, thousands of runners, young and old braced the morning chill, and ran either the 5km, 10km or 21km at the Randburg Sports Complex, Malanshof. The event was more than just a sporting occasion but also a great day of fun for the whole family. Stalls were set up to cater to different appetites and jumping castles and slides for the little ones.

Lucky Mohale claimed the R10 000 cash prize. “The race was tough but I am really glad that I beat the odds and made it. It was a really close call,” he said.

Runners represented different sport organisations, including the Florida Running Club and Central Gauteng Athletics. Some players from the Randburg Football Club used the opportunity to sell proudly SA scarves to raise funds.

“We are selling scarves for the U13 team to go to Portugal for a soccer camp,” said Mandisa Bardill, whose son plays for the team.

There was a great deal of enthusiasm from the younger runners, who did well in the 5km run, including Simoné Burger who was the first female to finish the 5km run. Giddy with excitement and pride, she said the race “was fun” – a statement contrary to that of some of her older companions.
