BREAKING NEWS: Fire destroys house

RANDPARK RIDGE - A family of five have been left homeless after a fire gutted their home.

The Cupido family of five have been left homeless after a fire destroyed their home on Suikerbos Avenue, Randpark Ridge at about 9 am on 1 May.

According to a family member of the displaced, Emid Van Goeverdem,  said that the cause of the fire was a lighter.

“The little boy Joey(3) was playing with a lighter when  he got scared and threw the lighter away, his dad was in the bedroom sleeping.By the time that his father had gotten up the fire had spread. He ran down stairs and got the family and pets out of the house. He (the father) was treated for smoke inhalation but is okay now” said van Goeverdem.

“This is just so heart breaking as the family has not being going through a great time. My sister was recently retrenched from work and  her husband works from home. Now they have lost their home, I really feel so terrible,” added Goeverdem.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Services responded to the call and four fire engines were sent out from the surrounding areas to extinguish the fire.

According to Goeverdem’s mother Cheryl Barker, there was a man who was driving on Beyers Naude when he noticed the smoke from the burning house.  He drove stopped and helped save some things from inside the house.

“A taxi that was driving past stopped and everyone from the taxi came out to help carry stuff out the house, they formed a chain passing the things out the house. We are so grateful to everyone for every single thing they have done,” said Barker

“I saw the smoke, my gardener and I then ran out, everyone from the neighbourhood came together to help, it was amazing. We saved as much as we could from the house,” said neighbour Veronica Engelbrecht.
