VIDEO: Centuries of wisdom

MALANSHOF — City of Joburg celebrates senior citizens 100+ years old.

Senior citizens 100 years and older were spoiled and treated to a lunch by the Executive Mayor Parks Tau and the MMC for Health and Social Development at the Walter Sisulu Hall.

With the oldest person in the room being 106 years old, MMC Noncebo Molwele said the celebrations went back to the old Biblical commandment saying, “Honour your mother and father and your days will be long”.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation donated brand new wheelchairs for the senior citizens and 200 blankets for members over 100 years.

“In every religion and culture, it is imperative that we honour our elders. These are the intellectual scholars of our communities and we are proud to be a part of this celebration,” said Muhammed Saloojee from the foundation.

All of the different speakers agreed that every culture was embedded in the elders. Members of the executive council agreed that living to see 100 was a rare gift these days and that in itself needed to be celebrated.

“As a City we believe in putting our senior citizens first because we are what we are because of our elders. We are delighted to have them here today and just to spoil them,” said MMC Noncebo Molwele.
