How to go from post-paid to pre-paid

JOBURG – Read on how to apply for moving from post-paid electricity to prepaid electricity.

While City Power is busy with the rollout of smart meters across Johannesburg, the power utility has highlighted that with the new meters, residents will have an option of choosing between using post paid or or prepaid electricity.

Spokesperson for City Power Sol Masolo has made light that before a customer can be converted to prepaid, they have to make a payment which varies between R 2 500 and R 6 000, depending on the type of smart meter the customer applies for. “If the customer already has a smart meter installed the conversion is for free as the smart meter has a dual role of post paid and prepaid features in it,” said Masolo.

He added that before the process of conversion begins, the account of the customer has to be paid up (settled). “This can be proven through submitting a municipal bill ( tax invoice) and ID book,” continued Masolo. He went on to explain that if the account has not been settled, a signed acknowledgement of debt, which proves and verifies that the customer has made arrangements to pay off the debt, must be submitted. Masolo highlighted that with the above mentioned information provided, the City Of Johannesburg will be able to request City Power to send technicians to install the prepaid conversion at a resident’s home.
