Cheer between generations

RADIOKOP — Junior Snuggles bring songs and cake to senior citizens.

The little ones at Junior College Snuggles spent their morning on 26 March spreading some cheer to the senior citizens at Abbey Cross Lodge. Singing and sharing songs with the elderly at the home, the pupils brought some much-appreciated joy and spark on the wet and cloudy morning.

Mary Reid, the lodge’s manager said the visit was a wonderful surprise to all the residents. Abbey Cross currently takes care of 57 patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.

“Everybody was so excited when the kids arrived here, the people really enjoyed them. Some of the people didn’t want the kids to go,” said care worker and team leader, Johanna Nkuna.

Nkuna has been working at the lodge for 10 years and helps train other care workers. She said the patients are divided into sections, from 1–11 with other staff members. Junior College Snuggles’ principal, Megan Hunt said it was a great experience for the pupils and teachers.

“We had grandparents’ day at the school a while back and the pupils sang songs to the elderly. It was so amazing. Abbey Cross is great for our kids because it has a country-side feel but it is not too far away.” Hunt concluded that the outing to the old age home was definitely the first of many.
