A tale of love

BROMHOF – Resident shocked as rabbit loses its partner.

A sad story of two rabbits played out opposite Boskruin Village in Hawken Road on 12 March when their love was separated by death.

Randburg resident Janine Ferreira explained that while on her way to drop off her daughter at school, she spotted a dead rabbit in the road and its partner, which was still alive, was sitting next to it.

“It was such a sad sight to see, as the living rabbit was sitting over its partner’s body –it was presumably hit by a passing vehicle.”

She explained that she tried to phone the Randburg SPCA but it was not open yet as she called before 8am.

“A Samaritan stopped next to the road and he took the dead rabbit’s body and buried it in a bushy area up the road. Unfortunately, the rabbit’s partner disappeared into the thick vegetation,” added Ferreira.

Randburg SPCA manager Craig Rudman said that it is difficult to catch a wild rabbit.

“If they are gone, they are gone. It is extremely hard to catch one after it has disappeared into thick vegetation. It will, however, appear again for food but my advice is to leave it be because it’s a wild animal,” concluded Rudman.
