The Johannesburg Floral Art Club held their monthly floral art competition on 3 March at the Ferndale Recreation Centre.
Every first Tuesday of the month, the group meets to share their floral designs and the best design on show wins, and a winner is selected in each of the four sections, namely the advanced, intermediate, novice, and pre-novice sections.
After the winners have been chosen by the panel of judges, an invited demonstrator or club member will then demonstrate a piece of floral artistry.
Club secretary Anne Dale said floral art differs from floristry,”It is not mas production. For us as a club, it is about the elements and principles of design. The group has grown a lot from when it started, we now boost about 55 members.”
All members agree that floral art is a passion.
Chairlady of the club Ena Hume explained that for her, it is just inspirational each time they meet.
”My passion for flowers has grown tremendously and floral artistry is a huge movement throughout South Africa,”said Hume.
Winner for the best display in the pre-novice group Agonia Kamba said she was just trying something new, and is glad that she had won.
”I love flowers, it is one of God’s greatest creations and I can make displays with flowers all day,” she said.
Club member June Jacobs demonstrated a piece titled Interpret it this way.
Winners in each section were:
· Advanced: June Jacobs
· Intermediate: Robyn Jelly
· Novice: Jill Folly
· Pre-novice: Agonia Kamba
The next group meeting will be at the Ferndale Recreation Centre on 7 April.
