Montessori holds shavathon to raise money for Cansa

FONTAINEBLEAU – The Montessori Africa School aims to raise R32 000 for the Cancer Association of South Africa.

Three Montessori schools in Johannesburg have been raising funds for the last seven years for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

The Shavathon at the Africa Montessori event was filled with tons of fun, including cupcake sales, nail painting, hair spraying and shaving.

According to principal of Africa Montessori Maria Erasmus, this initiative seeks to raise money for Cansa.

”Cancer can touch children’s lives in a school environment. We [children and staff] want to show our support to those who are fighting and also those who have lost their loved ones to cancer. Last year, we raised R 30 000, and this year we have set our target at R32 000.”

Breast cancer survivor, who came to show her support, Reshma Jungbahadur said, ”Someone out there may not be able to afford a mammogram and if we can give them a chance to get one done, that would be good.”

Jungbahadar was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

Two teachers of Montessori Africa shaved all their hair off.

Teacher Lia Dos Santos expressed that the reason she shaves her head is because it is not a challenge for her,”I do it for the people that are fighting cancer, my late husband passed away from cancer.’’

Teacher Shaakira Davidson, who also shaved her head and convinced her whole family to do the same, said she knows people with cancer who have lost their battles. “Today, I know, I have an opportunity to do something to help others.”
