The Flight Centre Travel Expo was held at the Coca-Cola Dome, where different exhibitors showcased cost-effective planned holidays.

About 100 exhibitors presented offers of massive savings and exclusive deals for travel – both at home and abroad.

Flight Centre has over 125 travel shops nationwide.

“We have been hosting this event for five years now and it’s the largest Travel Expo in South Africa and, in fact, on the entire African continent,” said Andrew Stark, Flight Centre’s managing director.

He added that Flight Centre saw the expo as an opportunity to stimulate travel in people’s minds and to expose them to all the different travel products that are on offer.

Different prizes were up for grabs such as, an opportunity to win up to R250 000 in travel prizes – just by attending the expo and a chance to win a holiday for free by signing up for travel.

A couple, who were about to celebrate their 50th anniversary, won an all-expenses-paid holiday to celebrate it.

Tour operators like Thompsons “open people’s minds to the existence of travel products,” said their media relations officer John Ridler.

Top Deck, who specialises in the youth market, were upbeat and offered three reasons which set their tour company apart from their competitors.

There was also Contiki, a well-established youth brand with their special offers.

Trafalgar Tours, an international company of long standing, were offering something different – their “be my guest unique inside experience,” for example, mixing with the locals on say a tour of a wine farm, if requested.

There was something for everyone and even sports fans were catered for with tour exclusives to the Monaco Grand Prix and the Rugby World Cup in London later this year.

Local holiday highlights included a trip to Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg.
