Caution! Hans Shoeman sink hole

MALANSHOF – Take caution when driving down Hans Schoeman Road, Malanshof.

A large sink hole has mysteriously formed on Hans Schoeman Road (East bound) close to David Malan and the Malanshof Spar.

According to witnesses in the area, the sink hole appeared at about 8am on 23 February.

A motor vehicle apparently drove into the hole.

It is about 1.6m deep and about 6 sq m wide.

Ward councillor 105 Mike Wood was called to the scene to investigate the severity.

Instantly, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) was contacted and immediately attended to secure the area around the sink hole.

It has been cordoned off by large black drums and red tape.

JRA’s spokesperson Bertha Peter-Scheepers commented, “A large storm water pipe became dislodged underground resulting in water seepage and erosion of the road surface layers.”

Wood said, “Randburg JRA should be installing safety lights around the area, in order to caution vehicles during the darker hours.”

According to Peter-Scheepers, the problem should be fixed by early next week.

The problem seems to be far worse than expected.

Another sink hole was found in the parking lot of the Malanshof Spar.

It is on the outer side of the fence securing the parking.

”I’ve contacted JMPD too and have warned them about the danger,” said Wood.

Furthermore, the JRA’s spokesperson added, “Traffic will continue to be affected as only one lane will be open for traffic to allow for the diversion

of east-bound traffic into the west-bound lanes. We thank you for your patience while repair work is underway.”
