Pupils awarded for excellence

FOURWAYS – Top Grade 12 pupils from Randburg and Bryanston were honoured at Montecasino on 7 February.

The Deputy Minister of Telecommunication Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize honoured 68 Grade 12 top achievers in fine style at Montecasino on 7 February.

The pupils, who are from Randburg and Bryanston areas, were awarded congratulatory certificates.

Fourteen schools from these areas were also recognised for their outstanding performance; they were each awarded with a trophy.

Out of the 68, three pupils were awarded bursaries to study at tertiary institutions by the Vodacom Foundation, and 18 pupils received 7-inch tablets from the Telkom Foundation.

Mkhize showed gratitude and congratulated the pupils for working hard despite their hardships.

“Education is the most important tool that will not only change your world, but will change yourself as well and success is a community effort,” she said.

Mkhize added that, “Many [controversial] of our people are still not aware of taking subjects that will make them key players in mobile industry, computer, television and especially the mechanical engineering aspects. And if we have pupils from vulnerable communities, we need to support them,” she said.

Mkhize also hit on the idea that more can be done with technology.

The acting head of the Telkom Foundation Nathi Kunene said they were happy that the department has made them part of this initiative to support pupils.

The executive head for the Vodacom Foundation Mthobeli Tengimfene also gave the pupils a thumbs up and said, through their support, they always wanted the country to progress.
