Douglasdale Police protesters got served

DOUGLASDALE – Confirmed dismissal of Douglasdale Police Station members involved in the illegal protest and intimidation.

Members of police who went on an illegal protest on 29 January, have been dismissed.

Douglasdale SAPS showed their dissatisfaction about various management issues, including racism.

On 5 February it was confirmed that 12 members of the Douglasdale SAPS involved in the protest were served with suspension letters.

Another 33 members have been issued dismissal letters and given 30 days to make written representation to the Minister of Police as to why their

dismissal should not be made permanent.

Seventeen members that participated in the intimidation incident as well as the illegal gathering and protest action were given both letters of suspension and dismissal.

National SAPS spokesperson General Solomon Makgale commented, ”Despite being warned that their actions constituted a serious misconduct in terms of Section 41 of the SAPS Act, the officers refused to desist. As a precaution, management decided that all the police officers who had embarked on this illegal gathering and protest should be disarmed.”

National Commissioner Riah Phiyega commented, “Management did everything they could to avoid the situation reaching this stage. Given the highly regulated environment we work in, we can neither afford nor allow ill-discipline. Although parties in question have not been found guilty, we are disappointed with their conduct as professional service to our communities is of paramount importance and cannot be compromised by such serious misconduct.”

Investigations are still underway at the present moment, and it is possible that other members may be charged.
