Explosion and fire in Ferndale

FERNDALE – Accidental gas explosion causes destruction in Ferndale.

A small flatlet in Ferndale exploded and burned down on the morning of 12 January.

The flatlet was part of a residential property in North Street. No one was injured.

It is suspected that it was an accidental gas explosion.

Area Manager for CSS Tactical Dean de Lange explained that one of the security company’s patrol vehicles was on Vale Avenue, roughly 1km away, when its occupants heard a very loud noise.

The men said they thought that they were being fired upon.

But when they saw smoke rising from a house several streets away they investigated and were the first on scene.

They saw that the flatlet was on fire, and called Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), who responded, albeit too late to save the flatlet.

De Lange added that the roof and solar panels on the roof of the house next to the flatlet were also damaged.

Randburg Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johannes Maja said that the explosion was an “accidental gas explosion”, and Randburg Police will not investigate the incident because the owner did not open a case at the station.
