Primary school plays in Wanderers match

ILLOVO – Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys U8s give the Lions a run for their money.

The Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys U8 cricket team played against Johannesburg’s best cricketers on 14 November, and they almost won! The primary school from Linden recently won an SMS competition that allowed them to play a match against bizhub Highveld Lions players at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Illovo.

In a closely-contested eight-over match, the youngsters played against a Lions’ team consisting of players from their men’s and women’s teams.

Dominic Hendricks, Devon Conway, Pumelela Matshikwe and Jameelah Shaikjee were some of the Lions players.

most accomplished Lions player, Neil McKenzie, acted as assistant coach to the U8s, and trained them before the game (see previous article). The U8s batted first, scoring 60 runs off their eight overs, with lusty blows and determined running between the wickets. The Lions lost wickets throughout their innings, thanks to excellent bowling and catches from the youngsters. Still, they reached 60 runs with two balls left.

The Lions scampered a quick single and won with one ball remaining. “The opposition took it a bit serious,” said the U8 team head coach JP Piquito. “But the boys did good. They have a very good chance against the Proteas.” The U8 team will play the South African cricket team at the Wanderers in January. “I enjoyed it,” said man of the match Dawid Pienaar, of the U8 team. “The best part was the bowling.”

U8 player Sandile Gumede said that he enjoyed “the playing and batting and everything.” The game was a curtain-raiser to the Ram Slam T20 Challenge match between the Lions and the Cape Cobras, which the Lions won by 47 runs.
