‘Leading Lady’ has its première in style

FOURWAYS – Stars attend Afrikaans movie première with grace.

Leading Lady held its première with great elegance at Cedar Square, Fourways, on 13 November.

Celebrities in the Afrikaans entertainment industry attended in droves, and wore their best suits and dresses, for the local romantic comedy.

Indeed, there were enough Binnelanders and 7de Laan actors to shoot a whole new soapie on scene.

Matthew Mole’s music features prominently in the film, and he performed live for the guests.

Although lead actress Katie McGrath was not in attendance, the rest of the film’s big names were present.

Bok van Blerk, Gil Bellows and Brümilda van Rensburg included.

“The movie was better that I imagined,” said Sonneglans resident Henk Pretorius, the director and co-writer. He added that cross-cultural love is “absolutely” possible. “The more you go, the more you break boundaries,” he said.

Robindale resident Tina Kruger co-writes the story and acts in a minor role.

“It [the movie] was so much more than my expectations,” she said. She agreed that love between people of different cultures is possible, and said that the movie showed this. “The film does cross oceans, language, culture and even physical borders for love,” she said. “It is definitely possible.”

The Leading Lady plot involves an aspiring British actress who persuades a farmer from the Free State to prepare her for a role in a film as an Afrikaans war heroine.

In return, she directs the annual concert at the humble Willemse farm. As you can guess, the actress and farmer fall in love. But will the actress choose to stay with him or follow her dream to be an international actress? The film will show in cinemas from 28 November.
