Wakaberry joins cancer fight

CRESTA – Wakaberry gets behind early-detection with PinkDrive during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Wakaberry Cresta has joined in the fight against breast cancer through a partnership with PinkDrive.

Owner of Wakaberry Cresta Elena Ferreira hopes that the event on 24 October will create more awareness in the community as residents will be awarded the opportunity to pick up vital information and engage with various breast cancer awareness educators, including trained mammographers, nurses and breast cancer survivors.

“A friend of mine is a breast cancer survivor and I think this will help people become more aware of the disease and what they need to do,” said Ferreira.

Wakaberry and PinkDrive want to raise funds and drive home their mantra that ‘early detection saves lives’.

According to Ferreira, it is important that women get checked and are aware of their bodies because the earlier cancer is detected the more treatment options are available.

A local public benefit organisation, PinkDrive, powers South Africa’s first mobile PinkDrive mammography and education unit.

To date, the organisation has provided over 5 000 free mammograms, 60 000 clinical breast examinations and vital breast awareness education to over

90 000 South Africans.

On 24 October, Wakaberry will be selling limited edition PinkDrive ribbons for R10, the proceeds of which will go toward PinkDrive funding, to assist with further early detection through their mobile units.

“The statistic that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime is a shocking one. But the fact that early detection means a very good chance of cure and long-term survival gives us all hope…,” said Michele Fourie, co-founder and managing executive at Wakaberry.

Noelene Kotschan, CEO and founder of PinkDrive, pleads with the community to support this initiative.

“…We are grateful for this initiative, as this will further convey the message that early detection saves lives,” she said.

Wakaberry is also giving out dedication cards to anyone who buys a PinkDrive ribbon. The idea is for customers to place their personalised dedication card on the in-store dedication window as a dedication to someone whose life has been affected by cancer.
