A quirky bowls book

BOSKRUIN – Glenn Macaskill to combine humour and controversy in book about bowls.

Randburg Bowls Club coach and author Glenn Macaskill (70) will launch his sixth book at the club in Boskruin on 24 October. The book written by the Randpark Ridge resident is called Bowls: Quirks, Chirps and Anecdotes. He says that it is a “cheerful, humorous but also incisive and controversial book” about the game and its history. Its laws, unusual occurrences and characters are also explored. Furthermore, the book discusses tenpin bowling, crown green bowls, table bowls and short mat bowls.

Macaskill has played bowls for 40 years, and played inter-provincially for 19 years (1982-2001). He has also coached for the last 23 years. “It feels super having written the book,” he says. “What I like is the facts, giving essence to the story.” He continues that launching the book is “a historic moment” for him because his son and grandson have just started playing bowls. The book received input by South African bowls players Allan Gordon, Bobby Donnelly and Gerry Baker.

The launch will start at 6 for 6.30pm and 50 copies will be sold. The book costs R140, and more copies can be bought through Macaskill’s website (www.crestpublishing.co.za). “It is an ideal Christmas or birthday present,” Macaskill concludes. Macaskill once beat the late South African great, and world champion, Doug Watson.
