Today gymnastics, tomorrow the world

BRYANSTON – Courtney Wilkinson is a world champion in the making.

Gymnastics is a sport which revolves around dedication, diligence and discipline.

Which makes one wonder how it comes so easily to young Courtney Wilkinson from Bryanston.

Wilkinson (15) is a Grade 9 pupil at Fourways High School and has recently returned from the Central Gauteng Gymnastic Association (CGGA) competition, proudly sporting South African colours.

“I’ve been training with Junction Gymnastics for four years now,” Wilkinson explains.

“Floor is generally my favourite,” but she feels that it’s the beam where she is likely to excel.

She came second overall in Central Gauteng on beam and received a gold medal for her performance and she was selected for the Central Gauteng Gymnastic A-team to represent Central Gauteng at regionals, where she qualified for the South African Gymnastic Games being held in Cape Town from 6 to 12 October.

“I would love to get to an Olympic level one day,” she continues.

“But if I can’t, I would love to teach the sport to other girls.”

Not only does Wilkinson excel in her sport, she also has a passion for art, nature and all outdoor activities.
