History of Linden Swimming Pool

LINDEN – Pool and park started as an open space for recreational purposes in 1901.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck has provided information about the history of the Linden Swimming Pool.

According to a pamphlet he produced about the suburb that was founded in 1899, the pool and its next door park were designated as an open space for recreational purposes in 1901. In 1910 the area was listed in the City of Johannesburg’s list of open spaces and was called the Linden Public Recreation Ground.

In 1939 the City renamed it Pistorious Place, probably to commemorate councillor and businessman Hendrick Pistorious.

A municipal swimming pool was then officially opened in October 1964.

There were demonstrations by the Transvaal Amateur Swimming Association and Normal Air Underwater Club, followed by a braaivleis.

The arched steel roof was designed by Lupini Robinson Architects, and completed in 2001.
