Metro Police arrest suspected ivory smugglers

RANDBURG – Couple and Zimbabwean national arrested on N1 south of Randburg.

A South African couple and a Zimbabwean national were arrested on the N1 Highway near Randburg on 9 August for possession of ivory.

The Metro Police crime prevention unit and police officers from Hillbrow Police Station joined forces to catch the alleged smugglers after receiving an anonymous tip-off.

“The information we received was that the Zimbabwean national was picked up by the couple in Musina, Limpopo Province, after crossing the border illegally,” said Metro Police spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

“The joint operation stopped the suspects driving a Ssang Yong Rexton on the N1 Highway near Randburg.”

Six pieces of ivory wrapped in plastic bags and with a street value of R160 000 was found in their possession.

The suspects appeared in the Sophiatown Magistrates’ Court on 11 August and the case has been postponed for further investigation.
