Oppikoppi 2014 ‘Odyssey’

NORTHAM – South Africa’s favourite music festival turns 20.

NORTHAM – That time of the year has come when music lovers in their droves make the trek to Northam, Limpopo Province, in order to turn a remote little farm, into an audio phonic dust storm.

This year the music festival phenomenon that is Oppikoppi, celebrated its 20th birthday from 7 – 9 August with a line-up including international sensations Wolfmother, Aloe Blacc and the Editors. Shortstraw, P. H. Phat, and a duo between blues giants Albert Frost and Dan Patlansky were some of the local acts who were definite crowd pleasers.

Randburg residents Cito Otto (Wonderboom) and Mike Pocock (State Society) also played with their respective bands, while DJ Fresh, also from Randburg, rocked the crowds well into Saturday night.

‘Odessey’ was the chosen theme for 2014, and festival goers were dazzled by bright and colourful lighting and laser displays, as well as the anthropological study of colourful human beings who climb out of the woodwork to attend music festivals only; and those few who brave to run the traditional mile around the camp site, in nothing but their birthday suits…
