BRYANSTON - St Sthithians prove their weight in gold in powerlifting competition

BRYANSTON – St Stithians High School is now able to flex their muscles for their women weightlifters.

Megan Leighton [class of 2013] and Shelby Bruce a Grade 11 pupil, participated in the 61 member Team SA.

Leighton and Bruce competed in a category Sub-Junior 57kg at the IPF World Raw Powerlifting Championships in Potchefstroom.

Bruce proved her championship status by lifting 75kg squat, 37.5kg benchpress and 105kg deadlift, giving a total of 217.5kg.

She was placed fourth in those disciplines and overall.

Megan’s skills were remarkable, with 100kg squat, 57.5kg benchpress and 115kg deadlift.

Her total of 272.5kg gave her third place, developing her previous SA Squat and benchpress records as well as her Commonwealth records.

On 23 August, two St Stithians girls will compete in the Inter-Provincial Benchpress and then proceed to the African Raw Championships in October.
