Good start for Diggers

MALANSHOF – Diggers Juniors win three out of five in their first matches of league.

RANDBURG – The Diggers Rugby Club junior teams started well on their first day of matches for the Golden Lions Junior Club Rugby league on 26 July, winning three out of five.

The U8s, U11s and U13s won, all beating Bobbies JHB Police, while the U9s and U10s lost to Inquina Rugby Football Club.

The U11 team, playing at home, earned the club their heaviest victory on the day.

The U11s dominated initially, breaking the Bobbies defence seemingly at will, to make it 34–0 at half time.

But Bobbies mustered a much better performance in the second half to score two tries, and defend well in their own 22.

The final score was Diggers 44, Bobbies 12.

“We played well,” said Diggers Junior Rugby Chairperson Sibonginkosi Moyo after the match.

“The result was good, but we lost our structure somewhere. Our last game was five or six weeks ago, so this happens. We will work on the rustiness and iron it out by next week.”

He added that the three wins out of five was a “good return”.

Next weekend, Diggers Juniors will play against Tukkies (University of Pretoria), who Moyo claims will be more difficult to beat.
