RANDPARK RIDGE – Pompous ceremony and youthful war cries met as Trinityhouse High School Randpark Ridge officially opened its new Astro Turf on 25 July.

The high school’s deputy principal David Brown opened the occasion with a devotion, saying that the Astro Turf was a gift from God, and thanked God for “putting the right people at the right place at the right time to make this a reality”.

Then the school’s boys and girls first hockey teams formed a guard of honour for Frank Thompson, CEO of AdvTech (the company that owns the school) and former player for the Southern Gauteng Masters hockey team, to walk through and join the principal of the high school, Christo de Wit, for the unveiling of the plaque and cutting of the ribbon.

“This is a momentous event,” De Wit said.

“For many years it was the dream of staff and families at this school to have an AstroTurf and now it has become a reality. Hockey demands of its players speed, agility and strength. These requirements demand the best possible hockey surface and this is what we have here.”

The school sang their We stand proud war cry, to mark the end of the ceremony.

An interhouse sports day then took place, featuring the old girls first team playing the current girls first team.

The entire installation project of the 120m x 60m hockey pitch is said to have cost R7.5 million.

The pitch is called St George’s Astroturf.
