Cable theft remains a worry

ROBIN ACRES – Three power outages in one week may be related to cable theft.

ROBIN ACRES – A number of incidents involving cable theft have been reported in the Linden Police’s Sector recently.

They may have contributed to three separate power outages which occurred in Robin Acres between 28 June and 4 July.

“There were theft of cable cases opened at Linden Police Station from Sector 1, and the police cannot confirm why there were power outages in the area,” said Linden police spokesperson Carol Mulamu.

Ward 99 councillor Bruce Herbert said that there had been a few incidents of cable theft in Ward 99 and that the standard copper cables were being replaced with single overhead cables that do not consist of copper.

The idea is that the new cables will be less appealing to cable thieves.

“It will take two to three months to replace the cables and we ask residents to please be patient during this time.”

Mulamu added that Linden Police were working hard to fight cable theft.

“Police hold crime meetings with different stakeholders weekly, one of them being City Power, at the police station to discuss crime issues in the area. They also assist each other on how to deal with those burning issues. Police and security companies are working together, patrolling in the area to get the perpetrators. We urge community members to contact the police when they notice any suspicious activities in the area. They can call the Crime Line 086 001 0111 or send an SMS to 32211.”

Engineering operations director at City Power, Louis Pieterse did not respond by the time of going to print.

Details: Linden police 011 888 9212; City Power 011 375 5555; Ward 99 councillor Bruce Herbert 083 274 3551.

  1. We had another cable theft yesterday in the Robindale area – 4th incident in 4 weeks! and best is that they steal the same road cables each and every time.
