Eddie Eckstein charms retirement village

CRAIGHALL PARK - What do you get when Eddie Eckstein, a well-known restaurant chain and the police congregate at a retirement home? You get a lot of fun.

Doppio Zero Greenside and the Parkview police joined forces to host a sumptuous high tea at Deansgate Retirement Village to do their bit for Mandela Day. Well-known comedian Eddie Eckstein was at this village in Craighall Park to keep the crowd laughing on 18 July.

“We had a really bad robbery at our Greenside branch recently,” Tarryn Leigh Nash, Doppio Zero’s marketing coordinator said.

“The Parkview Police were really helpful on the scene, and so we decided to work with them for our Mandela Day event. We thought we’d do our 67 minutes for the old-age home, because they also deserve to have their day brightened on Mandela Day. So many old people are just left at homes to do nothing, and see nobody.”

Colonel Nanda Moodley from Parkview Police said that the police contingent enjoyed its outing at the retirement village.

Eckstein kept the crowd in stitches, using the floor to dance, joke and flirt his way into Deansgate resident’s hearts.

“What a wonderful surprise this was,” Lucille Evans, who lives at Deansgate, said.

“I didn’t even know it was happening. I was getting ready to do my hair and I was called in here for this treat instead. Mr Eckstein is so funny and the food is lovely. What a delight!”
