NORTHWOLD – Residents of the Sunrise Estate Retirement Village came prepared to clean the area on Mandela Day.

Pamela Wood, one of the residents said, ” This is the fifth year we have been honouring the spirit of Mandela. And we need it more these days.”

They picked up litter, broken bottles and some rubble outside their retirement village.

Robert Taylor said, “Three weeks ago we had a robbery in the complex. This area is sometimes used by criminals who hide in the bushes and sell drugs. I have written letters to Ralf Bittkau, complaining about the rubble in the area but nothing has been done.”

After the 67 minutes of cleaning up, the 30 residents had lunch which was sponsored by Woolworths, Golden Harvest and Northwold Spa.

Ward 101 Councillor Ralf Bittkau responds” I was hoping to attend their Mandela Day clean-up event, but I was not feeling well and I told them. I have received their complaints about rubble and I asked City Parks to help clean the area next to the spruit.

I have been pushed from pillar to post about who is responsible for the clean up. If there is illegal dumping, I was not aware of it.

I would notify Pikitup to come and clean up the rubble because it is not safe. I was just told that the state is suppose to clean the rivers twice or three times a year and I have thus asked for the Council to give me a copy of the Service Level Agreement.”
