FONTAINEBLEAU – No greater improvement may have been seen throughout the history of sport than Randburg’s action cricket team’s performance this year.

Last year, the Randburg Rhinos finished last in the Superleague cricket Gauteng Men’s B competition, without a sniff of victory in any of their eight matches.

However, this year, they participated in the Men’s A section and finished in 14th place, out of 15 teams, with four wins.

The Randburg Rhinos won their last game at Randburg Action Sports Arena, Fontainebleau, on 20 July.

It was a hard-fought match which the Rhinos won by 16 runs over Springs Panthers.

The Rhinos batted first and posted 75 through determined innings by all four batting pairs.

The match was even until the final eight overs of the Panthers’ innings, where many wickets fell to give the Rhinos the ascendancy.

“It is always difficult to defend 76, an average score,” said the Rhinos’ captain Adrian Woolnough.

“We crushed them from the second skin [after the eighth over]. We got lots of wickets and maintained the pressure to win.”

The players agreed, this was an improvement from the previous year’s performance, and the team is on the rise.

According to coach Zakkie Liebenberg, his team showed more courage and determination to win although they fell out of the league a while ago. “I am proud of my team, we have improved a lot this year,” he added blithely, ” we took on the big boys and we were humble in the winning.”

The team might not have advanced to the semi-finals to be played on 10 August, but they recorded another precious victory in a tough league.
