Digging up the 18th green

RANDPARK – Randpark Golf Club green torn up for reward.

RANDPARK – It is not every day that members of a golf club are given the opportunity to destroy one of its greens.

On a recent cold Friday night members of Randpark Golf Club flocked to the club in their hundreds for the much anticipated cutting up of the 18th Green on the “old” Firethorn Golf Course that is currently under construction.

For weeks members had been buying their lucky numbers with the hope of winning the grand prize of R10 000.

The green had been prepared by Roger Innes, senior golf superintendent at the club, and all the sod had been cut into squares and lifted.

Each square had been marked according to the green plan.

Club Captain, Craig Macleod, announced after the regular Friday Golf Competition that members may lift their sod.

An envelope containing a certificate to the value of R10 000 had been buried under one of the squares, earlier that day.

Greg Collier-Payne hit the jackpot and was congratulated by the club captain.

A festive celebration followed and a fitting farewell to one of the favourite holes on the Firethorn Golf Course.

The Firethorn Renovation Project

Following the highly successful and well received renovation to Bushwillow Course, the much anticipated renovation project started on 1 June on the Firethorn Golf Course.

With 18 new greens, new bunkers and six new holes, members are excited about the brand new golf course, a course with better routing and with superior holes.

Problem holes will be eliminated and the river will become an asset to the course rather than an eye-sore and liability.

The old course lacked feature holes, memorability and talking-points.

This is addressed in the proposed layout.
