African participation in world cup ends – residents comment

RANDBURG – residents comment on Africa's performance in the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

Nigeria and Algeria were booted out of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil by France and Germany on day 18 of the tournament, 30 June.

This means that all African teams are eliminated from the world cup.

Residents commented on the matches and Africa’s world cup performance (see below).

France and Germany will now play each other in a quarter-final on 04 July.

France first beat Nigeria 2–0 in their round of 16 match.

Pogba put France ahead by heading in after Nigeria keeper Enyeama partially parried a corner in the 79th minute.

Nigeria’s Yobo then gave France a goal, accidentally deflecting a cross into his own team’s goals with his shin in injury time.

Germany then beat Algeria 2–1.

Algeria proved tough opponents, forcing the Germans to wait for extra time before scoring.

André Schürrle either scored with a master-class flick, or a fluke, as it appeared he had no control over the shot with his heel that opened scoring for Germany from a cross in the 92nd minute.

Özil put Germany beyond reach, first allowing Schürrle to shoot after a break, but when Schürrle’s shot was blocked, Özil put the ball past the keeper and two defenders behind him into the goal.

Djabou scored a consolation goal for Algeria, a finish from a great cross in extra time’s injury time.
