Local singer spreads her wings

NORTHWOLD – Local singer to soar to the New York Film Academy.

Northwold resident Kate Mahony (19) is a local singer reaching new heights.

After coming second in the Best Singer Adult category at the International Modelling and Talent Association (IMTA) in New York last year, she was offered a two-year bursary to study Musical Theatre Conservancy at the New York Film Academy.

“I feel privileged to be offered this amazing opportunity,” said Mahony.

“I never lost sight of my dreams and have worked toward it ever since.”

When she was nine years old, Mahony’s parents took her to see Phantom of the Opera, where she was “utterly enraptured” by the performance and since then wanted to perform on stage.

Before flying to New York, the singer with an angelic voice will raise money for accommodation by singing at two fundraising concerts this year.

The first concert, Lyrics of Love, will be held at Theatre on the Square, Sandton City, on 13 July and will include internationally acclaimed South African opera tenor Stéfan Louw.

Mahony generally sings songs from musical theatre, but her concert will comprise contemporary music and a few duets.

According to Mahony, music and shows bring people together

“If there is one impenetrable force on this earth, it is music. Music has the ability to change moods and help people survive daily life.”

She plans to become a successful performer overseas and give back to local talent.

“My hope is that by being successful overseas, I can make a difference to the arts here. Giving back with scholarships and funding can make opportunities more easily available for the best of the best to learn how to be even better.”

Her course, Musical Theatre Conservancy, includes all dance styles, stage and film acting and vocal coaching.
