Randburg knitters take the world by a woolen storm

RANDBURG – One knitted square at a time.

When Ferndale resident Ronda Lowrie began her knitting project called ‘Knit-a-Square’ in 2008, she had no idea how the project would go viral – leading up to thousands of contributions from all over the world.

“When we started, we thought it would be ‘just a wee knitting project!’ and that it might result in just a few hundred squares,” says Lowrie, Knit-a-Square co-founder.

Her aim was to get knitters to knit colourful squares, which would then be combined and sewn together into blankets for the less fortunate. “It was always difficult for me to see people suffer in the cold, harsh winter. Especially the children, it broke my heart.”

The project has since grown exponentially thanks to the internet, and contributions from countries including UK, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Italy, Malaysia, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Netherlands, China, Saudi Arabia, Norway and many more.

Today, Knit-a-Square has collected more than 700 000 squares and distributed more than 30 000 blankets to the needy in Soweto, Diepsloot, Zandspruit, Cosmo City, Alexandra, Tembisa, Katlehong and in and around Bloemfontein, Cape Town, White River, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Newcastle and Ladysmith.
