Dumping is still illegal

FERNDALE – Rubbish is being dumped illegally next to streets in Randburg.

Leaving rubbish on the side of the road is illegal.

According to Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, this act contravene’s the City of Johannesburg bylaws.

Randburg Sun spotted a dumping of cut branches on the side of Cork Avenue, Ferndale, on 26 May.

Resident Janet Palmary also noticed a great deal of litter next to streets in Northwold, and recently shared her photos with the Randburg Sun.

Speaking for Maropeng – the visitor centre at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site – “Harry the Hominid” – said that South Africa’s natural beauty is spoiled when people carelessly throw their rubbish around.

He continued that not only does rubbish look ugly, but it is unhealthy, as rubbish piles up and becomes a home for rats and other pests.

“Litter can also harm the environment by making it dirty and poisonous to animals and plants,” he said.

“Rubbish on streets, whether it is dropped on purpose or falls out of [a full] dustbin, can get washed or blown into storm water drains. The water from the storm drains then goes directly into our river systems, where it can pollute the water and become a danger to water creatures and plants.”

He asked residents to stop littering and teach others not to litter.
