Taekwon-do hits the park as domestic workers learn self-defence techniques

BRYANSTON - The Vandia Grove Residents Association domestic workers meeting educated the workers an a great self defense mechanism.

The Vandia Grove Resident’s Association meeting for domestic workers was one packed with kicks and stomps as Norman Magua of the Magua Taekwon-Do Club was their special guest.

Donna Sipmen, committee member of the association, said Magua held a workshop and taught domestic workers basic self-defence techniques on how to protect themselves in a conflict situation.

“Domestic Workers are considered the eyes and ears of the suburbs. They often have information and knowledge of criminals and criminal activities. It is important to us to keep our staff educated and informed on crime, criminal trends, and even medical awareness,” said Sipmen.

It was thus necessary to have the workshop with a professional taekwon-do instructor.

Domestic workers meetings were established in 2008, and have been a great success, with 60 members who attend regularly.

Sipmen stated that the meetings take place ever second Wednesday of each month at Bryanston Park. “Other domestic workers in the area are welcome to join in on this initiative created by the Randburg police, to help in the fight against crime.”
