Domestic Watch teaches awareness of criminal signage

FONTAINEBLEAU - The general Domestic Watch meeting addressed the importance of knowing criminal signs,

The Linden Precinct Domestic Watch meeting ran successfully at the Fontainebleau Community Church on 20 May.

Domestic Watch and police customer service trainer Penny Steyn hosted the domestic workers and garden servers, and also shared information with them about criminal signage.

“Often when I tell people about the signs criminals leave, they think I am lying and that it is only a myth. People should be highly aware of the signs, and act on them. This is why I thought it was important to sit with the domestic workers to educate them on it,” said Steyn.

To ensure that she had the right information, Steyn had met with a criminal that was serving time at one of the prisons she regularly visits to present motivational talks and training. “He shared with me details about the different signs and wanted to help me get the word out there in an effort to fight crime,” she added.

At the meeting, Steyn stressed the importance of domestic workers and members of the public being constantly aware of what is going on around them. “Anything could be a sign, a car parked outside for too long, your dog barking, and suspicious people. And when you see any suspicious activity happen, you should immediately contact the police or their patrolling vehicle in your area.”

Domestic worker Nosi Tshuma said the meetings which she has regularly attended have become extremely helpful to her. “I have personally never been attacked by criminals, but I am certain that the information I receive at the Domestic Watch meetings will help me to know what to do, should I be attacked. I therefore urge other domestic workers and residents to join their local Domestic Watch,” expressed Tshuma.
