Shifting crime trends in Honeydew Sector 1

BOSKRUIN – More violent crime in Honeydew Sector 1.

Housebreakings and -robberies have become more violent in Honeydew Sector 1. The spate of crime in Sundowner may be declining, and despite 200 drug-related arrests in March, the problem prevails.

These were the main findings presented during the Honeydew Sector 1 Community Policing Forum meeting held at The Barn Christian Fellowship, Boskruin, on 12 May. Honeydew police, the sector’s Community Policing Forum (CPF), security companies, resident’s associations and general public met to discuss crime in the sector, and ways to combat it.

“Crime has become more violent lately,” said Honeydew Sector 1 CPF chairperson Greg Pearce.

“Since January, people who break into houses do not plan as much. They now just use guns [more than before].”

He also said that driveway robberies in the sector seem to generally take place earlier in the evening, incidents on weekends have increased, and they often turn into house robberies.

Although Sundowner experienced a great deal of crime in the past few months, residents could not report any recent incidents, leading to the conclusion that crime has decreased in Sundowner.

A third conclusion was that despite 200 drug-related arrests in the sector in March, drug dealing continues in certain areas –the worst being Golden Harvest Park and its surrounds in Northwold, including Banbury Cross Shopping Centre and Olievenhout Avenue.

Honeydew police’s Warrant Officer Gabriel Nonyane said people had been arrested on Olievenhout Avenue for drug dealing, but many had bribed their way out of police custody.

He also reported multiple recent muggings on Malibongwe Drive.

Areas in Honeydew Sector 1 include Boskruin, Bromhof, Bush Hill Estate Agricultural Holdings (AH), Glen Dayson AH, Hunter’s Hill AH, Kelly Ridge, Northhgate, North Riding AH, Northwold, Randpark Ridge, Sonneglans, Strijdom Park and Sundowner.
