Shooting and police chase in Malanshof

MALANSHOF – Robbery and shooting ends in arrest for attempted murder.

A shooting and police chase took place in Malanshof two weeks ago and ended in the arrest of a man for attempted murder, armed robbery and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

At 3pm on 7 May, Linden police responded to an armed robbery.

“It is alleged that the suspect approached the complainants, who were walking on Hans Schoeman Street and pretended to be interested in them,” said Linden police spokesperson Carol Mulamu.

“The suspect then fired a shot and demanded their cellphones and cash.”

Linden police responded to the complaint and found the suspect sitting at a petrol station.

“When [the suspect] noticed the police, he fired in their direction. The suspect dropped the firearm and fled the scene on foot. He jumped several fenced walls onto Silverpine Avenue.”

Police officers pursued and apprehended him and recovered the unlicensed firearm and ammunition. No one was injured during the incident.

The 24-year-old suspect appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 9 May facing the charges, but the case was postponed for further investigation.

“The accused was linked to two armed robbery cases in Linden which occurred in the same week,” added Mulamu.

The bail application is set for 21 May.
