Fenced down

BLOUBOSRAND - Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafukwane assured residents that the fencing on Riverbend Road will be completed by end of April.

A concerned resident has complained that Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafukwane has not lived up to the statement he made earlier this year. Wlady Cisak said the councillor promised the fencing off the land would be finished by the end of February but, is still not completed. “It is now April and this is nowhere near completion. There are pieces missing, reject pillars lying all over the place. It’s an absolute mess and I cannot understand why every time work is done to this site to clean it up, the work is never completed and it is left in a worse state than it was before the clean-up,” complained Cisak.

In response to this complain Mafukwane said, “Indeed from the inception of the project we anticipated that the project might be concluded by the end February or mid-March. However, due to various challenges experienced by project managers this was not possible.”

Cisak’s complain is based on the statement made by Mafukwane, when he applauded the Bloubosrand residents for working with him to get an open land in Riverbend Road, closed off. Earlier this year Mafukwane said, “The residents had been in discussion with the City of Joburg to have the area cleaned up and secured. They had started these negotiations long before I had become their councillor.”

He said the community secured R2 million funding for a new project on the land in the corner of Riverbend Road and Vloot Street. Mafukwane stated then that, the fence would be completed by end of February this year. However, the fence is still not completed few months later. The councillor has since explained that the delay is compounded by various factors including the rain which dominated in February and March.

“The main factor was rain which dominated most of February and some parts of March month. The contractor has indicated that they should wrap up by the end of April. I will continue to keep a very close eye on this project and progress thereof,” added Mafukwane.
